Connecting 3D with on-demand manufacturing of clothing

Joneien Johnson Freelance 3D Apparel Designer at Joneien Leah Johnson Design

I would like to know more about technologies or companies connecting 3D with on-demand manufacturing of clothing. Will this allow democratization of the fashion industry and allow small designers to start their collections as well as make the industry more sustainable? I imagine a future where I the designer can create my samples for fitting, style review and marketing images in my 3D apparel software and have it connect directly with factories to produce the item only when the order is placed by the customer. There is also much opportunity here for true made to measure with auto grading based on a customers 3D body scan. All of this together could eliminate waste, excess inventory and reduce returns.

What do you think? Are there already steps today that is getting us closer to this reality?
